(must surely be a thief and a robber!) 1 "I assure you, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! ("I assure you, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!) 2 For a shepherd enters through the gate. (For a shepherd enters through the gate.) 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, (The gatekeeper opens the gate for him,) and the sheep hear his voice and come to him. (and the sheep hear his voice and come to him.) 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice and come to him. (The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice and come to him.) He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. (He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.) 4 After he has gathered his own flock, (After he has gathered his own flock,) he walks ahead of them, (he walks ahead of them,) and they follow him because they recognize his voice. (and they follow him because they recognize his voice.) 4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they recognize his voice. (After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they recognize his voice.) 5 They won't follow a stranger; (They won't follow a stranger;) they will run from him because they don't recognize his voice." (they will run from him because they don't recognize his voice.") 5 They won't follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don't recognize his voice." (They won't follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don't recognize his voice.") 6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration (Those who heard Jesus use this illustration) didn't understand what he meant, (didn't understand what he meant,) 7 so he explained it to them. (so he explained it to them.) 6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn't understand what he meant, 7 so he explained it to them. (Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn't understand what he meant, so he explained it to them.) "I assure you, I am the gate for the sheep," he said. ("I assure you, I am the gate for the sheep," he said.) 8 "All others who came before me were thieves and robbers. ("All others who came before me were thieves and robbers.) But the true sheep did not listen to them. (But the true sheep did not listen to them.) 9 Yes, I am the gate. (Yes, I am the gate.) Those who come in through me will be saved. (Those who come in through me will be saved.) Wherever they go, they will find green pastures. (Wherever they go, they will find green pastures.) 10 The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. (The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.) My purpose is to give life in all its fullness. (My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.) 11 "I am the good shepherd. ("I am the good shepherd.) The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.) ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ 12 Hired workers are not like the shepherd. They don't own the sheep, and when they see a wolf coming, they run off and leave the sheep. Then the wolf attacks and scatters the flock. 13 Hired workers run away because they don't care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and they know me. 15 Just as the Father knows me, I know the Father, and I give up my life for my sheep. 16 I have other sheep that are not in this sheep pen. I must bring them together too, when they hear my voice. Then there will be one flock of sheep and one shepherd. 17 The Father loves me, because I give up my life, so that I may receive it back again. 18 No one takes my life from me. I give it up willingly! I have the power to give it up and the power to receive it back again, just as my Father commanded me to do. 19 The people took sides because of what Jesus had told them. 20 Many of them said, "He has a demon in him! He is crazy! Why listen to him?" 21 But others said, "How could anyone with a demon in him say these things? No one like that could give sight to a blind person!"
